It is easy to get excited by Begonias. There are Begonias with lots of small flowers, Begonias with huge double flowers, and Begonias with no flowers at all. Some begonias have tiny leaves while others have leaves as big as your head. There are Begonias with colorful leaves that steal the show from the flowers it produces. Some begonias are perennials in very cold climates, while others survive only in a warm terrarium in your home. There are species that survive the desert and others that require a rainforest. Over 1500 species of begonias have been recorded. Like I say, it is easy to get excited by begonias. We are.
At PlantSmith we take the genes of some of these species and mix them with existing varieties using traditional breeding methods to make stronger, prettier, and easier to grow plants that have never been seen before now. From the thousands of seedlings we grow each year; only 3 or 4 are deemed good enough to be PlantSmith varieties. These are offered to commercial growers throughout the country as small liners that can be grown into finished plants that are sold in Garden Centers and florist shops around the country.
PlantSmith also grows larger finished plants that can be purchased at retail outlets in the Portland and Salem Oregon area. We also have a booth at the Oregon Flower Growers Association Wholesale Flower Market on Swan Island in Portland. We do not sell retail.
